J&K cops file case for video showing ‘police beating boys’

A day after a video showing two boys being ruthlessly beaten up purportedly by policemen went viral on social networking sites in the state, the J&K Police on Wednesday registered an FIR against unidentified persons for uploading it. The police also said if the video was found to be genuine, the role of the policemen seen in the clip would be investigated.

"We have registered a case at police station Baramulla," police spokesperson Manoj Kumar said. "The case has been registered under Section 66 A of the Information Technology Act".

The Act, which makes it an offence to post any content that is "grossly offensive or has menacing character" online, has been facing controversy.

Kumar said investigations would cover all aspects of the case. The video, apparently shot in 2010, shows cops — some in uniform and others in civilian clothes — beating two boys. It also shows them removing their clothes, including trousers. The boys are hit with sticks, belts and jackboots. In the two-minute video, a senior police officer can be seen sitting on a chair and watching the beating without any intervention.

The video was uploaded on Facebook and Twitter Tuesday evening.
