A police officer was killed and three others injured when suspected militants targeted a police party in a market in Chadoora, in Budgam district, on Monday afternoon.

According to reports, the Station House Officer (SHO) Chadoora, Sub-Inspector Shabir Ahmad, and his guards were inspecting the market when a group of suspected militants attacked them with automatic assault weapons at around 1.30 pm. While Ahmad died on the way to hospital, Constable Firdous Ahmad and Special Police Officer Mohammad Shafi sustained injuries. Police said a civilian was also injured in the attack.

Superintendent of Police Budgam Irshad Ahmad said, "The officer died in the attack. A civilian also received injuries in the attack."

The security forces have launched a crackdown in the area. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The area where the attack occurred today is considered to be relatively peaceful and free from militancy.

Officials said militants may have sneaked in from neighboring Pulwama district where some militant modules are active.

Meanwhile, an encounter broke out at Rajpora village in Handwara, when security forces launched a search operation. Officials claimed militants were hiding in the village and fired on the troops when they were asked to surrender.
