Jagan gets bail in assets case after spending 16 months in jail

Sixteen months after he was arrested, YSR Congress Party leader and Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy was granted bail in the disproportionate assets case on Monday.

Special CBI court judge U Durga Prasad granted him conditional bail on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and two sureties. He was asked to surrender his passport and not leave Hyderabad without the court's permission. The court also asked him not to directly or indirectly induce or influence the witnesses in the case.

The formalities are expected to be completed on Tuesday morning, after which he is likely to be released.

Jagan was arrested on May 27 last year. The case relates to investments made by various companies in Jagan's firms, allegedly as quid quo pro for various favours bestowed on them when his late father Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was chief minister between 2004 and 2009.

The CBI, which filed a memo on Monday morning stating that it had completed its investigations into the case, had opposed his bail plea his seventh plea before the court stating that he could influence the witnesses.
