Job creation in state dips by 35%

Job creation in all the major cities of Gujarat, excluding Ahmedabad, has witnessed a decline by as much as 35%, between January and December 2012 so far, says a report released by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) on Tuesday.

With a total of 16,350 jobs generated in 2012, Ahmedabad witnessed 100% rise in the first six months of the year. However, in the second half of the year, there was a 28% fall in the number of jobs in the city.

The rest of the cities - including, Vadodara (5,000 jobs), Surat (3,600 jobs) and Gandhinagar (1,100 jobs) - saw job generation dip between 26-35% in this year, states the Assocham survey called "Job Trends Across India in 2012". Delhi and NCR topped the Assocham survey list with 1.1 lakh jobs, followed by Mumbai (over 77,000 jobs), Bangalore (over 75,000 jobs), Chennai (over 44,000 jobs) and Kolkata (over 25,000 jobs) amid the top five metro centres.

While job generation in Ahmedabad declined by 28% in the second half of the year, smaller cities like Kochi (30%), Agra (14%), Ajmer (12%), Udaipur (10%), Kota (7%), Kanpur (5%), Vellore (5%) and Jalandhar (4%) registered a growth of job generation between July-December.

The influx of national and international hotel chains setting up new hotels in Ahmedabad driven job creation in the city. "With about 4,300 jobs, hospitality sector accounted for maximum number of new jobs generated in Ahmedabad," said Ms Bhagyesh Soneji, chairperson of ASSOCHAM Gujarat Council.
