Jonty RHODES’ Evolution Theory

Apart from being the most prodigious fielder of his generation, Jonty Rhodes also managed to set a new benchmark as far as acrobatics and athleticism on a cricket field were concerned. In a glorious and action-packed career that spanned more than a decade, the former South African stalwart also could lay claim to have been the fittest cricketer in the world. And that too in an era where the support staff included a manager and a physiotherapist.

It's not surprising then that fitness remains a paramount priority for Rhodes even in his present avatar as the fielding coach of the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Now he's decided to take this fixation to the next level by launching his own brand of fitness and lifestyle products, Evolution Sports Nutrition (ESN).

And Rhodes informed Sportsline that he and business partner Atikaay Narula have already pitched for their products to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

"We are talking to the BCCI and the MCA and going through the process. There's been a very good response so far. And being part of the Mumbai Indians does help slightly. But I'm not just someone who's on the label. My heart is in the business and I am in this for the long run," said Rhodes.

With athletes having to undergo dope tests on a regular basis these days, there is always a natural skepticism regarding the intake of any new products. But Rhodes insisted that the players need not be concerned about that issue when using the ESN range.

"As an ex-player and knowing how much the guys get tested these days, a key part of what we're doing is to ensure that our products are dope-free. Especially in an environment where players are getting tested day in and day out, in and out of competetion," he explained. With players in the national team also getting tested for body fat by the in-house nutrionists, a solely protein-based intake isn't enough to fulfill the needs of an active player's body. In Rhodes's words, the need of the hour was for a perfect combination of various elements.
