Former Supreme Court judge A K Ganguly, indicted by a Supreme Court panel for sexually harassing a woman lawyer, ruled out his resignation as the chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) even as the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal made a fresh demand for his removal, on Human Rights Day on Tuesday.

"I am not. That's all," Ganguly said when asked whether he would give in to the demands of his resignation. He was talking to reporters after attending his office after a gap of three days.

Later in the day, Ganguly presided over a WBHRC programme organised to mark the International Human Rights Day.

Addressing the programme, Ganguly exhorted the gathering to fight for human rights.

"No fight for human rights is ever lost. Fight for the right. Those who fight to uphold the rights of the people, fight it by paying a price," he said.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, also present at the event, came in defence of Ganguly saying he had "full faith" in him.

"I have full faith in him. He will decide what has to be done, " Chatterjee said when asked if Ganguly should resign after indictment by the SC panel, which found his conduct towards the woman lawyer as that of "sexual nature".

"Everyone has a right and dignity. If he is proven guilty, the laws of the country will punish him," Chatterjee said.

He also questioned the authority of the Supreme Court appointed panel in probing the matter.

"SC panel...I don't know under what authority they went into it. Forthwith they have decided not to touch any such matter. Why this exception was made and what is the outcome of it? Nothing," said Chatterjee.
