The Varanasi police, on Friday, arrested local independent MLA Ajay Rai and four of his supporters for creating ruckus and disrupting the traffic. They were also charged for causing hurt and deterring public servant from performing their duty.
The police later produced the accused before the CJM court, which sent them to judicial custody. Ajay Rai is an Independent MLA from Kolasala constituency in Varanasi. The Varanasi DIG, DK Thakur, said on Friday, the MLA and his supporters staged a sit-in outside the Chetganj police station protesting the arrest of a local corporator, Sanjay Singh alias Doctor and his associate Jitin Jha. They were arrested for allegedly assaulting Virendra Dubey, the owner of the Hotel New International, and robbing him of Rs 10,000 on August 18. Angry over the arrest, the MLA along with his supporters reached the Chetganj police station and asked the cops to release the accused claiming that they had been wrongly framed in the case. As the police refused to release the accused, Rai staged a sit-in outside the police station and started raising slogans claiming police harassment to "innocent" locals. Despite several requests, Rai and his supporters refused to relent. The police later arrested the MLA and four of his supporters.
