Rape-murder: Bihar man gets death after six-day trial
PATNA: Katihar district court on Saturday sentenced a 28-year-old man to death for raping and killing a three-year-old girl within nine days of the incident. Sanjay Rishi, a resident of Bhaishdiara under Barari police station of Katihar, raped and killed the girl from his neighbourhood on January 24 night. The FIR was registered on 25 January. Katihar SP Kim said 15 witnesses recorded their statements before the court after the police submitted chargesheet within 24 hours of the incident.
K C Tyagi files nomination for RS
PATNA: Senior JD(U) leader K C Tyagi on Saturday filed his nomination papers for a Rajya Sabha seat that had fallen vacant after the resignation of rebel leader Upendra Kushwaha. Tyagi, a close aide of JD(U) national president Sharad Yadav, filed his RS nomination in the presence of Yadav and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. Tyagi is likely to win uncontested. The last date for filing nominations is February 4. Kumar said the party filed Tyagi's name after consulting alliance partner BJP.
Puducherry Ex-CM Shanmugham dead
KARAIKAL: Veteran Congress leader and former Puducherry Chief Minister P Shanmugham died on Saturday after sustaining head injuries from a fall in the bathroom at his residence in Nedunkadu near here, the police said. Shanmugham (86), was first rushed to a government hospital and preparations were on to shift him to Puducherry for further treatment. He died at around 11:30 am, sources said. Elected from Yanam, he was CM from 2000 to 2001.
BJP leader held for 'molesting' girl
GOPESHWAR: A local BJP leader has been arrested from Devasthan in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand Friday for allegedly molesting a 15-year-old girl, the police said. Ram Prasad Sati, who is general secretary of the BJP's Pokhri Tehsil unit, had offered the girl a lift in his car while she was going from Pokhri Bazar to Devar area of Chamoli on January 14, the girl's father said in his complaint.
