Lightning, rainfall shut down 30 feeders, damage 10 transformers

Mild rain followed by lightning on Monday night and Tuesday morning resulted in shutdown of about 30 11KV feeders on Tuesday night and damaged more than 10 transformers in different parts of the city. While power was restored in many areas on Wednesday morning, it was restored late in the afternoon in other areas.

In Model Town Extension area alone, about five transformers were damaged due to lightning. Out of these five transformers, two were in Dugri phase-2, and three in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.

The transformers needed to be replaced which would cost around Rs 5 lakh, said sources in the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).

The power supply in these areas thus remained off for more than 12 hours at a stretch and even later as well. Erratic supply was witnessed because load shedding was on.

In Sabzi Mandi area as well, two transformers had been damaged but later they were replaced, said PSPCL sources. Power supply in these areas as well remained off for more than 10 hours.

However, chief engineer (Ludhiana central) K M Sharma said, "We have more than 500 feeders in the city and out of these about 30 11KV had shut down. But the city did not face much of a problem. Few feeders were switched off taking precautionary measures only and later they were switched on, once the weather had become normal."

The overhead lines had developed faults in many areas while tree branches also caused disruption in power supply.
