The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will end parking space contracts and put in place a web-based parking system that offers pay-and-park facilities with computerised parking receipts. The data will be transferred to the central BMC server.
"Contractors running our 92 parking lots bring little returns. We have decided to end their contracts. We will put a new system in place that will also enhance security," said a senior civic official of the BMC Roads, Bridges and Traffic department.
Over a year ago, the BMC had floated the idea of a transparent online system, in a bid to tighten security and check private contractors from levying wanton parking charges.
The BMC wants the software to record the number and model of vehicles parked, the entry and exit time and hours they are parked. "By computerised linking the system to the BMC server, we will be able to track movement of vehicles in the city. This will help in case of any terror threats or vehicle thefts," said Additional Municipal Commissioner Aseem Gupta.
Initially, the web-based computerised parking will be implemented in BMC's pay-and-park facilities. There are plans to bring similar facilities, at malls, multiplexes, hospitals and other places. The new system is also aimed at reducing parking woes.
In the the next phase of the plan, BMC would include a system of booking parking space in additional lanes categorised or listed as parking areas, especially near residential societies.
"Many residential areas do not have adequate parking space and we can categorise certain lanes near these areas as residential parking and allow residents to park vehicles in listed places, which will also be recorded in our database," said the official.
The department is also looking at adding the facility of online booking of parking spaces in advance.BMC has 92 parking spaces run centrally, and 25 parking lots run at the ward-level.The corporation has yet to formulate a solution to illegal parking problem in the city.
