Live: CWC clears Telangana, Hyderabad to be joint capital for now
Telangana is poised to become the 29th state of India as the UPA is slated to take a final call on the issue of Andhra Pradesh bifurcation today. Here are the highlights of the developments:
7.41 pm: Reacting to the go-ahead to the creation of a separate state for Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the Congress was compelled to take the decision. Terming it as a victory for the people of Telangana, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the decision was taken because of the struggle of the people and the pressure created by "parties like us".
7.32 pm: Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh said the creation of the state of Telangana is likely to take four to five months.
7.18 pm: Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said after 10 years, a new place would be identified to be made the capital of Seemandhra. According to him, the government of India will propose the issue to the Andhra Pradesh government.
He said that the decision to create Telangana has not been a hasty one, adding that concerns of Seemandhra such as water sharing would be addressed promptly.
7.11 pm: Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken and party general secretary Digvijaya Singh make the official announcement of Telangana getting a go-ahead from the CWC and the UPA coordination committee.
Maken said the Centre would be asked to take steps to create a special state for Telangana.
Hyderabad is slated to become the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a period of 10 years.
6.47 pm: Reports say that celebration have begun at the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) office in Hyderabad after the proposal for separate statehood getting clearance from the Congress Working Committee and the UPA coordination committee.
6.35 pm: The Congress Working Committee has endorsed separate statehood for Telangana. This came after the UPA coordination committee gave its go-ahead to the creation of Telangana.
