Shah Rukh Khan is ready to woo the audience yet again, this time in a romantic avatar in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, the most awaited love story of 2012. In an unbridled conversation with Screen, the superstar talks about legends, love stories and Yash Chopra, the eternal romantic
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan in keeping with tradition since the last few years, is fronting the biggest Diwali offerings in recent times —Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ). The film being the late film-maker's last, a love story almost eight years after he directed Veer Zaara, assumes an even greater significance. Khan also polled second in Screen Survey 2012 on living legends (among actors) notching a higher percentage than veteran actor Dilip Kumar and Aamir Khan, who were in a tie for the third place. Excerpts from an interview with the actor:
How does it feel being considered a living legend, in the august company of Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar and Aamir Khan among others?
I can retire now(smiles). It is very nice to be appreciated for 20 years of work — I don't think it's a service, I think it's a job. My audience is my employer, and I am glad they think I am doing a good enough job. I hope I will not be removed from my job anytime soon.
And what would you attribute your employer's confidence to?
There are a few things to it. You have to have done some years, and the other part is the assumption that because you have a certain persona on screen, you are larger than your work. It may or may not be true. I don't think I am larger than my work or someone who should be emulated. Workwise, yes. I work very hard. I know my craft a bit. In my case it could perhaps be that there are a lot of things that are attached to me — I am an educated man, I speak very well, I am humble or am a family man, a business entrepreneur... Sometimes, people build it up to be something much nicer than what I am.
