A week after a woman's body was found inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, police have arrested her boyfriend for the murder.
The Kasturba Marg police Wednesday arrested Pravin Taltkar (35), the boyfriend of Sarla Ahire, whose body, with her neck slit, was found on November 28.
The breakthrough came when it was found during the probe that Taltkar's phone was at his his residence at the time of the incident, but none of the calls was answered.
According to police, Taltkar stayed in Teen Dongri area of Goregaon (West), where the victim lived with her mother and sister. Taltkar knew the family and had been in a relationship with the victim for the past two years. On November 27, Taltkar picked up Ahire from outside her home in an autorickshaw and took her to a Malad restaurant, where they had lunch. After spending some time, Taltkar took her to the national park from a rear gate. Once inside, he asked Ahire to wait, saying he had to go to answer nature's call.
Taltkar allegedly went inside a toilet nearby and prepared an injection containing poison. He then allegedly took her to an isolated spot and asked her to take the injection since she was not feeling well. Reluctantly, Ahire took the injection and fell unconscious. Taltkar then allegedly slit her throat with a knife he was carrying and left the spot, taking her mobile phone with him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravin Patil said that after killing Ahire, Taltkar went to her house. When Ahire's mother told him to ask her about her whereabouts, he sent a text message to her cellphone from his and then promptly sent a reply, saying she was fine.
A day later, when Ahire's family informed Taltkar she had not returned, Taltkar even accompanied them to Kasturba Marg police station, where they filed a missing person's complaint.
