Distracting partymen

During Assembly proceedings, certain Samajwadi Party MLAs make a beeline to the CM's desk with applications and petitions, unmindful that they are making a nuisance and also distracting the Chief Minister who, as the leader of the House, is expected to be fully attentive. Last week, Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey had to intervene several times to restore order. Since his words had only a temporary effect, the Speaker had to request the Chief Minister to ensure that the SP legislators shed their annoying habit.

Straight from the heart

PCS officers are on cloud nine. As many as 111 of them have been promoted to IAS, clearing the backlog that had accumulated over the years. Obviously, the credit goes to the government for taking steps to ensure that the officers got their due. But Shriprakash Singh, general secretary of the UP Civil Service Association (Executive Branch), went overboard while expressing gratitude. In a statement, he thanked SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav, whom he also referred to as "Netaji", Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, and SP general secretary Ramgopal Yadav for their "untiring efforts and blessings". He also thanked Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan, PWD Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav and Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani. The obvious sycophancy apart, how come Singh, who is expected to know the protocol, named the Chief Minister after 'Netaji'?

Somebody referred to Yadav as "Netaji", much to Tiwari's amusement. He remarked: "Who is Netaji? As far as I know, Subhash Chandra Bose was called Netaji. But you people call Mulayam Singh Netaji! I didn't know."

'My' agenda first

In the last session of the Assembly, Charkhari MLA Uma Bharti was a topic of discussion for her absence. In the current session, she is again a talking point, this time for attending the House. She arrived one day and, barely after 10 minutes, went out when the House was in turmoil, with the BSP protesting against the deteriorating law and order and the BJP protesting the delay in announcing the price of sugarcane. She went to the Chief Minister's office, handed him a four-page list of demands for the development of Charkhari, and left. The BJP members were embarrassed. Here was their own MLA who showed no interest in the issue the party had raised, but had her own agenda.
