Beginning in the national capital from December 21, the second edition of Delhi International Film Festival (DIFF) will see Ludhiana-based sculptor Harminder Singh Boparai showcasing his artwork on 100 years of Indian cinema.

Boparai, who left his studies from Punjab Agriculture University (PAU) midway to pursue two-year diploma in sculpture from TAC Art Academy, Ludhiana, has been called as a special invitee by the organisers after he won the 'Silver Minar' award last year at the first edition of DIFF.

Hailing from Ghudani Kalan village in Payal tehsil, Boparai this year created a unique artwork on 100 years of Indian cinema celebration, which is also the theme of the festival.

Talking about his 4.5-foot sculpture created from metal scrap, Boparai said, "I have made a person using the camera while the woman has been created using old speaker and silencer. Other things like an old microphone and cycle parts are used to complete the artwork."

A peacock from motorcycle tank and a few wires, a butterfly from an old spring, a tortoise from a discarded cycle seat are some of his artworks which have gained widespread appreciation in the recent years.

"This line was so alien to people that they often told me I am ruining my future but constant support of my parents and wife got me going," said Boparai, who won various gold medals in sculpture and clay modelling when he started sculpturing as a hobby during college days.

He is currently working as a teacher of clay modelling and sculpturing at Sat Paul Mittal School. His artworks will be on display at NDMC Convention Centre, Cannaught Place, New Delhi, from December 21 to 27.
