Madhya Marg is deadliest with 107 fatal accidents this year

Madhya Marg turned out to be the deadliest stretch with 20 per cent of the total fatal accidents being reported this year from this area. Of the tot­al 107 fatal accidents reported this year till November 30, 20 took place on Madhya Marg.

The 8 km stretch from Housing Board light po­i­nt till PGI roundabout also witnesses highest tr­affic flow during peak hours.

The most recent accident on the killer stretch took place on November 29, in which a motorist was killed after being hit by a tractor. A resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Ajay who was riding on a motorcycle, was declared dead on arrival at PGI.

According to official data of the Chandigarh Traffic Police, most number of accidents occur between 8.30 pm and 11 pm. As many as 68 accidents took place between this time, out of which 32 were fatal. Early mornings, however, witnessed the least number of accidents. A total of 22 accidents took place between 8.30 and 10.30 am, of which only three were fatal.

The data also shows a decrease in the number of fatal accidents but a rise in the number of non-fatal accidents. As many as 123 fatal accidents were recorded last year. The number of non-fatal accidents have increased to 286 till December 8 this year as compared to 274 last year.

More men died this year as compared to women with figures showing 95 accidents involving men as compared to 16 involving women. Similarly, 234 men were injured in accidents this year as compared to 87 women.

"Madhya Marg is the arterial road of the city with a bulk of traffic moving towards Panchkula from Chandigarh and the other way round. We have been asking the UT Administration to build flyovers and underpass on the stretch, to minimise accidents," said Maneesh Chaudhry, SSP Security and Traffic.
