Man ‘strangled’ by cops in UP

A man was allegedly strangled by three policemen, including a sub-inspector, and another person after he was picked up from his house in Neemgaon police station area of Lakhimpur Kheri district Thursday night.

Kheri SP Dalvir Singh Yadav said the police team had gone to the victim's house after a complaint was lodged against his son. On not finding his son home, policemen picked him up. A murder case has been registered against the policemen and the man who accompanied them, identified as Sanjay Verma of Neemgaon area. The police are conducting raids to arrest the accused policemen and Verma, the SP said.

Yadav said Verma had lodged a complaint, alleging that one Pappu had forcibly taken away his motorcycle because he could not repay a debt of Rs 3,000. Sub-inspector S N Singh, constable Rajesh Kumar and homeguard Ram Niwas reached Pappu's house, along with Sanjay Verma, around 10 pm. Since Pappu was not there, the policemen picked up Pappu's father Sabir, said the SP. He said that the police team had gone merely 10 metres away from his house when Sabir fell unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. Sabir's family alleged that the policemen and Verma beat up Sabir as he was not ready to accompany them to the police station.

The post mortem examination identified strangulation as the cause of death, said Yadav.
