Man held for extortion, police say lavish lifestyle led to crime

The police have arrested a man for allegedly attempting to extort a city-based businessman. Balwinder Singh, originally from Tanda but now living in BRS Nagar I block, was held after he allegedly sent an SMS to industrialist Davinder Singh, in which, he threatened to harm the businessman's son if he was not paid Rs 1 crore. The message had been sent on October 8 but Davinder reported the matter to the police only on October 10. Police then traced the sender through the mobile number detail and finally zeroed in on Balwinder. According to the police, Balwinder led a lavish life and funded his lifestyle by duping people. He had married thrice and was living with one of his wives in BRS Nagar. Police authorities said that Balwinder was unemployed. He has reportedly also confessed to the crime.
