Man held for murdering sister-in-law after rape bid

Police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly murdering his sister-in-law after a failed attempt to seduce and rape her when her husband was not home.

Police said he has confessed to having murdered her, and added that it was for him that she had been approached for marriage, but she had chosen his younger brother instead. He had been harbouring anger against her ever since, police said.

Kalwa police said Gayatri Lohar (20) was found dead in her residence in Vitava, Kalwa on Friday evening by husband Sampat (22) when he returned from a function in Panvel and informed cops.

Sampat told the police that his brother Kamlesh (24) had been with Gayatri when he had left for Panvel. Kamlesh was nowhere to be seen and could not be reached on cellphone. Police finally got a trace on his cellphone and picked him up from Ghodbunder Road in Thane.

On questioning, Kamlesh claimed he had to rush to his native place in Rajasthan on urgent business but could not specify what. Police said there were other discrepancies reinforcing their suspicion.

Police said he could not explain semen stains found on his undergarments. After sustained interrogation, he confessed. "On Friday, after Sampat left, Kamlesh tried to talk Gayatri into having intercourse with him. When she refused, he forcibly kissed her and touched her inappropriately. A furious Gayatri said she would expose him once Sampat returned. Kamlesh strangled her to death to avoid being found out," said senior police inspector Prakash Nilwad of Kalwa police station.

Kamlesh left for Rajasthan, planning to cook up a story about having to leave in a hurry due to an emergency. However, he could not think of any plausible explanation to give his relatives for his sudden arrival and turned back, police said.
