Maoists planted bomb in second corpse too

DF

The Maoist squad that attacked security personnel in Latehar, Jharkhand, on Monday, surgically implanted bombs inside the bellies of two — not one — slain men, it has emerged. The second bomb — placed inside the abdomen of CRPF man Baidyanath Kisku, actually went off, unlike the one inside Babulal Patel, which was found by doctors at Ranchi's Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and subsequently defused.

The bomb inside Kisku's abdomen exploded after a villager who had gone to retrieve the bodies fiddled with the stitches on the body, CRPF director general Pranay Sahay said. The abdomens had been cut open and stitched back intricately so that if pulled open, the bombs would explode due to the release of pressure.

Senior officers said a group led by CPI (Maoist) central committee member Dev Kumar Singh alias Arvindji had been moving around in the Latehar jungles for the past one month, and had tried out their deadly new tactic on animals. Carcasses of several donkeys, dogs and goats had been found in the areas where the group had travelled, the officers said.

Two zonal commanders of the Maoist army, Harinath Singh and Dinesh Singh alias Panditji, were arrested for the attack on Thursday.

Arvindji, who is 65, heads the Maoists' Bihar Jharkhand North Chhattisgarh Special Committee, and is said to be close to Maoist chief Ganapathy and arrested politburo member Amitabha Bagchi. Arvindji moves with the armed Eastern Regional Bureau militia, which contains several women cadres. He is believed to be personally protected by two women named Basanti and Meena, both in their late teens, sources said.

"Arvindji's group, which is said to be around 300-strong, entered Jharkhand in the first week of December 2012," Sahay said. "They are trapped in a 200 square-kilometre forest area in Latehar, and are looking for a safe hideout. They are trying to move south but are facing continued resistance from security personnel."
