A day after he allegedly rammed five pedestrians and sent his driver to surrender at Versova police station, Mercedes Benz C-Class owner Falgun Shroff was arrested from Lokhandwala in Andheri (West) Tuesday.
Police claimed he confessed to being behind the wheel when the accident occurred.
They said Shroff was picked up in the morning and received bail on a cash bond of Rs 10,000.
He was taken to Cooper Hospital for a medical examination, but whether he was under the influence of alcohol or lost control of the car is still to be established as the test was done 36 hours after the accident.
At 1 am Monday, Shroff, who manufactures furniture, came speeding from Four Bungalows to Lokhandwala hitting five men taking a post-dinner stroll at Mhada Junction.
After seriously injuring two of the five, Shroff fled.
Police found the front number plate of the car at the crime scene and traced his address through a Mercedes Benz showroom in Andheri (West). They had drawn a blank at Thane RTO where the car was registered.
Shroff initially sent his driver to Versova police station with the damaged vehicle and the driver confessed, but police became suspicious. "Our officers felt something was fishy," said Chhering Dorje, DCP (zone IX).
The victims are all actors from outside Mumbai and have been living in a rented apartment in Four Bungalows for the past year-and-a-half.
Shashank Singh (26) suffered several broken ribs, a fractured arm and leg and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital, while Janardhan Singh (28) is being treated for head injuries at Surgicare Hospital in Lokhandwala. Vishal Sharma (22), Abhilash Vyas (26) and Mahesh Vange (28) suffered minor abrasions and were discharged a couple of hours after the accident.
