Metro rail project: PMC firm on its decision, seeks equal share from PCMC

The decision of the elected representatives in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday to equally share with Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) contribution of 10 per cent for the proposed 16. 59 km metro rail route from Pimpri Chinchwad to Swargate may lead to controversy again.

Earlier, the same decision by PMC was opposed by PCMC saying that the sharing expenditure should be as per the costs incurred in each jurisdiction. The project got delayed due to differences and now PMC has rejected the PCMC proposal by restoring its earlier decision.

The corporators while approving the proposal also suggested that the metro stretch be extended up to civic jurisdiction limits. The ruling NCP demanded that the route be extended up to the civic jurisdiction limit that is going to go beyond Katraj after inclusion of 28 more villages in PMC.

The elected representatives in the general body meeting had approved the administration's proposal of implementing the route from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate which was later extended to Katraj.

The PMC corporators objected to the administration's proposal seeking share depending on the length of route in the respective civic jurisdictions.

"The citizens of both the civic bodies will benefit from the route. Also, the detailed project report of the Metro had recommended equal sharing of expenditure. Thus, we should go by the detailed project report," the corporators said.

Few days ago, the PMC standing committee had approved the proposal based on PCMC decision and suggested that the route be extended up to Katraj.

Of the 16.59-km route, 7.15-km stretch is in PCMC limits and a 9.44-km stretch in PMC limits. The PCMC general body had passed a resolution to bear the cost of the 7.15-km stretch and the PCMC municipal commissioner had urged the PMC to clear its part of the route and send a joint proposal to the state government.
