Model rushes to police, corners 4 for eve-teasing

4 aspiring actors held, let off on bail.

Even as the gangrape of a young woman in Delhi and a spate of attacks on women in Mumbai have raised questions on safety of women in cities, four aspiring actors were arrested for eve-teasing after a small-time model complained against them in Oshiwara in the early hours of Thursday.

The presence of mind of the 24-year-old woman helped police arrest the four. They were released on bail on Friday.

Police officers said the model was in her car on the road opposite Oshiwara police station in Andheri west at 1am Thursday, when four men in an SUV allegedly overtook the car and began hooting and making vulgar gestures at her. Panicking, she took a U-turn from the road leading to Adarsh Nagar and drove to the police station.

The men saw her enter the police station and sped away, said the police.

Oshiwara police said after she narrated the incident police officers searched for the men in the direction they had gone, but they could not be traced. The model had, however, memorised the licence number, which helped police to nab the accused later.

"The woman had the presence of mind to note down the number and approach the police station," said sub inspector Vijayanand Patil of Oshiwara police station.

The woman allegedly told the police that she assumed the four were rapists and habitual offenders. The Delhi rape case had struck fear into her mind and that made the model drive to the police station.

The men identified as Rajiv Tiwari (21), Dinesh Soye (25), Sanjay Yadav (21) and his brother Ajay Yadav (22), were arrested for eve-teasing. The four were presented in a court on Friday and released on bail.

The police officers said the four are struggling actors and stay in a room at Taraporewala Garden in Goregaon west. They are looking for work in Bollywood and try to get small roles in the day and venture out at night to attend parties to get noticed, said officers probing the case.
