Retaliating against attacks on him by the Congress, the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Friday said the Congress-led UPA has been ruling the country for nearly a decade, and instead of answering for the government's failures, the ruling party's leaders were demanding answers from him.
Wondering whether the UPA government's one-point agenda was to attack him, the Gujarat Chief Minister said Congress leaders should answer people on issues such as inflation and corruption.
Modi said Congress leaders had tried the same tactics during the Gujarat Assembly elecetions in 2012 but failed miserably as he was elected chief minister for the third time.
Modi also announced that if the BJP came to power in 2014, their government will assess its performance every year and make it public.
Modi was addressing party workers at a "Welcome rally" organised for him by the Pune BJP unit. Later in the day, Modi inaugurated a new building of the Deenanath Mangeshkar Charitable Hospital in the city.
"In a democracy, those in the government are servants of people. Shouldn't they then be answerable to public?," he asked, and went on to answer it himself.
"If you have heard Congress leaders in the last few months, all they are doing is demanding answers from Modi. They have been ruling the country for nine-and-a-half years but don't want to answer any questions on their failures. Even the vibrant media of our country seems to have failed in getting any answers from the government. Congress leaders are so arrogant that they don't answer any questions from the media," Modi said.
"Congress leaders are making new allegations against me every day. New dirt is being thrown at me everyday. But they should remember that they used the same tactics in Gujarat but they failed miserably," Modi said.
