In fact, his decision to call on Rajnath was seen as an indication of his acknowledgement of the changed equations, and his attempt to play along, without antagonising the new leadership.

Rajnath, on his part, has always acknowledged that Modi is an "extremely popular" leader of the party, but has avoided naming anybody as the party's prime ministerial candidate, saying that the party's parliamentary board will take a call at the appropriate time.
