Molestation case: Bar owner called cops thrice

FP

The owner of Club Mint, the bar outside which a girl was molested by a mob even as a television crew shot it, was the first to call up the police, it is now learnt. But there was allegedly no response from the police station despite at least three calls. The Assam Police has placed under suspension Subham Chandra Barua, second officer in-charge of Dispur police station. The bar's licence has been cancelled too.

DGP J N Choudhury had earlier said it was a hotel across the road from where the Bhangagarh police station received a call, on the basis of which the first patrol party reached the spot.

SSP (City) A J Baruah, however, said the bar owner should not have called up Dispur police station when Bhangagarh was hardly 2 km away.

The police are sure now that the incident began inside the bar, where the victim girl had gone to attend a party on July 9. CCTV footage of the bar telecast by NewsLive showed a brawl inside the bar where the girl was involved in fisticuffs with her friends, as also the bar manager trying to physically push them out. NewsLive reporter Gaurav Jyoti Neog had earlier said he was passing by the area when he saw the brawl, and started shooting with his mobile, simultaneously calling up office to send a camera crew.

Bar owner Rajesh Jalan and his manager refused to comment.

Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri has, meanwhile, ordered cancellation of the bar's licence, and directed all 127 bars in Guwahati to shut down by 10 pm.

One the other hand, the Assam Police constituted a special investigation team on Sunday to probe the incident, while Chief minister Tarun Gogoi gave the police time till Tuesday to book all culprits.
