Samajwadi Party legislator Abu Asim Azmi has blamed Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav for ignoring the party's Maharashtra unit of the party.

Azmi, who is SP president in Maharashtra, claimed the party SP can win the Lok Sabha seat only in alliance with Congress and Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra.

"There is no other option as we have only minority votes with us, which also drifts away when it sees that we are not winning. Both Mulayam and Akhilesh are not giving me time and still hope to make SP a national party," he stated.

He also claimed no important person has approached the SP in Maharashtra for contesting the Lok Sabha elections under the party's banner. "When there is no chance of winning, why should anyone approach us, even minority voters have distanced themselves after recent communal riots in UP," he said.

Azmi recently appointed Vilas Kharat Patil, a former MLA, as working president of SP's Maharashtra unit. For the first time, SP has also come out in favour of providing job reservation to Maharashtrians.

"I am working with photographs of Mulayam and Akhilesh only. I had done preparations for holding big rallies in Aurangabad and Mumbai, but they did not allot dates for the rallies. If I have to work on my own then, what is the use of Samajwadi Party. Now, I am getting tired of such behaviour," Azmi told The Indian Express.

Azmi is SP MLA from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar in Mumbai. From Azamgarh, he is SP's face in Maharashtra and is considered close to Mulayam. SP had contested 31 seats in the 2009 Maharashtra Assembly elections and won four seats. Azmi had won two Assembly seats — Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar and Bhiwandi East. It had polled 7.71 percent of votes on the seats it contested. Mulayam had organised a function at SP office in Lucknow to felicitate Azmi for party's performance.
