Multiple stereotypes of dengue virus circulating, says NIV

Scientists at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) have said multiple stereotypes of dengue virus were circulating and there was no change evident in the virus. Senior scientist at NIV Dr Cecilia Dayaraj told The Indian Express that there has been a spurt in the number of dengue cases and an analysis of the samples shows that multiple stereotypes of dengue fever were prevailing.

"It is an ideal situation for fever with intermittent rain and hot weather conditions contributing to an increase in the mosquito breeding sites," Dayaraj said. Several laboratories in the past fortnight too have reported an increase in the number of patients getting their blood samples tested for dengue.

At Golwilkar Laboratory, the statistics are telling. "A fortnight ago, 8-10 patients would get their blood samples tested for dengue on a daily basis, but now the number is 20-25, with a minimum of seven testing positive for dengue," said lab director Dr Awanti Golwilkar Mehendale.

The increasing number of blood samples being tested at various laboratories in the city during the last fortnight has also had several pathologists allaying fear that dengue is like any other viral fever and there was no reason to panic. At Deenanath Hospital's pathology laboratory, consultant Dr Sujit Joshi said there has been a trend where increasingly patients with dengue fever have been detected in the last couple of years.

"Dengue is like any viral fever and most of the symptoms are common. But due to complications attached with the fever, there has been an increase in the number of persons reporting their blood samples for an NS-1 antigen test via ELISA for dengue," Joshi said.

He assured that there were a few bad cases where the fever had led to complications. "People should not panic and fear complications," he added. At private laboratories at Yerawada, Dr P K Sharma said there had been an increase in the number of blood samples sent for examination.
