Congress delegations from Rae Bareli and Amethi had but one point to stress with AICC chief Sonia Gandhi — to ensure a larger role for her son and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi. The Congress chief, however, maintained her silence on the issue, instead advising the youth that they should not rush into elections.
Rae Bareli, wiith five Assembly constituencies, does not have a single Congress MLA. In Rahul's Amethi, out of five Assembly constituencies, only Amethi and Jagdishpur are represented by Congress MLAs Amita Singh and Ram Sewak. At a meeting of ex-MLAs, ex-MLCs, members of the Sewa Dal and Mahila Congress from Rae Bareli and Amethi, Sonia urged the cadre to gear up for the Assembly elections and work to strengthen the party network.
"The old Congress workers who have proved their loyalty with the party in the long run would be preferred this Assembly election. She indicated that some younger leaders will be given a chance to enter electoral politics in local body elections," leaders said after meeting. Only two names had been finalised, from Satwan and Saraini, they said.
Sonia met around 50 ticket aspirants from Rae Bareli and Amethi and informed them that the final decision would be communicated to the selected candidates by Rae Bareli DCC president Uma Shankar Mishra and Rahul Gandhi. She did not react to a request from a delegation of ex-MLAs, Sewa Dal and Block Development Council members that Rahul be given a full-time assignment to work in the state unit.
