NCP takes dig at Rahul as Cong V-P

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday took a veiled dig at the Congress leadership for appointing Rahul Gandhi party vice-president saying that such an appointment happens only when a party has serious problems.

Maintaining he has nothing against Rahul, NCP general secretary D P Tripathi said here, "Whenever a vice-president was appointed, there were serious problems within the Congress party. I am merely drawing your attention to the history of appointment of vice-president. Whenever the vices of presidency began, there was appointment of vice-president in the Congress party."

On the the issue of prime ministerial candidate, he said, "If Dr Manmohan Singh is there, obviously he is the Prime Ministerial candidate." As for Rahul's projection as the PM candidate, he said,"If a youth is a leader, it is good."

The Congress sought to play down the ally's comments saying NCP chief Sharad Pawar had already made it clear that Rahul's elevation was an internal matter of the Congress.
