'NDA's PM candidate will be decided at an appropriate time'

Narendra Modi

Amid clamour in BJP for Narendra Modi as Prime Ministerial candidate, key NDA constituent JD(U) today ridiculed such a "search" at the moment and said the candidate will be finalised by allies at an appropriate time.

"A search is being undertaken in such a way as if it is research for a nuclear bomb," JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav told reporters while commenting on the debate whether Modi would be NDA's Prime Ministerial candidate in 2014 general elections.

"The search for Prime Ministerial candidate should stop. There are 540 seats in Lok Sabha and NDA has never said that we have decided upon a candidate nor have we discussed it. We will decide this at an appropriate time. BJP will put forth its view, we will put forth our view and then it will be decided," Yadav, who is also NDA convenor, said.

The Gujarat chief minister's projection as prime ministerial candidate has been opposed by JD(U). Party leader and Modi's Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar had said earlier that only a person with secular credentials should be in the race to become the next prime minister of the country.
