On a long drive with lover, cop shot dead

A police constable was shot dead by two unknown assailants here, police said Tuesday.

Constable Mehul Ratilal Chauhan (25) had taken his girlfriend Jeniffer out in his friend's car. When both were having a quiet time in the parked car near the banks of the Mahi river, two unknown assailants called him outside the car and fired at him, Deputy Superintendent of Police M Patel said.

"One of the assailants fired two rounds. One round misfired, but another did the damage and Chauhan died on the spot," the police said.

As per the complaint registered by Jeniffer, Mehul, a constable posted at Anand town police station, borrowed his friend's car in the morning for a long drive. Around 3.30 pm, they parked the car at an isolated place and were having a chat when the incident occurred.

Inspector General of Police (Ahmedabad Range) R B Brahmabhatt also rushed to the spot. A case has been filed at the Khambolaj Police Station and a probe is on.
