Looking for revenge against his former wife, a man stabbed another woman several times outside Dadar's Swaminarayan temple on Monday morning. Vijay Sangelkar, 35, who has been arrested, has told the police he mistook the woman for his ex-wife, who had divorced him and slapped a dowry harassment case.

Sonal Lapashiya, 25, of Bhandup in Mumbai had her head covered in a scarf. Lopashiya, who is studying to be a company secretary, was on her way to a library in dadar when Sangelkar attacked her from behind with a sickle, injuring her in the neck and her arms, police said.

The daylight happened in front of a number of witnesses, including policemen, and Sanglekar reportedly surrendered without resisting.

Sonal was taken to Sion Hospital and later Bombay Hospital, where she is currently being treated. She is said to be out of danger.

"Sanglekar, a labourer from Sawantwadi, has claimed that he stopped stabbing Sonal when the scarf came undone and revealed her face," said Suresh Parab, senior inspector in Matunga police station.

"His wife divorced him two years ago. She had shifted to Nallasopara six months ago with their four-year-old son. She had also registered a complaint of dowry harassment against him, and Sanglekar had been planning revenge since then. He was paying her alimony every month."

Sanglekar has reportedly told the police he reached Mumbai on Sunday morning, planning to kill his wife and then surrender.

He said he bought the sickle in Andheri and went to his wife's house in Nallasopara, but could not bring himself to murder her in front of their son and hence asked her to meet him in Dadar on Monday morning. Then he saw Sonal crossing the street.
