Party organiser booked for death of Symbiosis student in Oct 2012

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday night arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the death of a 19-year old fashion designing student from Symbiosis Institute, Sanam Layak Hasan, after her birthday party in October 2012. Accused Mohnish Vijay Bolate, who had organised the party, has been booked on charges of "causing death due to negligence".

The CID said Bolate, a resident of Yerawada, worked as a manager at a boutique where Sanam worked part time. Sanam was from Andheri, Mumbai. It was her birthday on October 3 and her parents had come over to Pune a day before, said the CID, adding that the family celebrated the occasion in the hotel the Hasans had checked in.

CID Inspector Deepali Dhadge, who is investigating the case, told the court that Bolate organised a party at a flat in Brahma Sun City in Vadgaosheri on October 3. Her college friends and colleagues attended the party. Her parents were aware about it, she said.

During investigations, the CID found that 24 bottles of beer, one bottle of whiskey and one of bottle of vodka were brought to the party. Dhadge said the CID had recorded statements of 17 witnesses. "We have come to know that Sanam was forced to drink beer, whiskey and vodka by Bolate. Sanam started vomiting at 2.30 am but was not taken to hospital and Bolate did not even inform her parents. In the morning, when she did not wake up, she was rushed to hospital where she was declared dead on arrival."

The autopsy report said the cause of death was alcoholic intoxication with ischaemic heart disease. The Yerawada police had later registered a case under Section 174 (police to inquire and report on suicide etc) of the CrPC. The case was taken up by CID after her parents approached the state government. Bolate was held under Section 304 A of IPC, but was released on bail on a personal bond of Rs 15,000.
