Passengers panic as IndiGo flight asked to take go-around

Around 180 passengers aboard a Mumbai-Chandigarh IndiGo flight received a scare when the flight, just before landing at the Chandigarh Airport, had to take a go-around. This created a panic among the passengers. The matter has been reported to Director, General Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when an IndiGo flight 6E-433 was about to land at the airport. While descending, the IndiGo crew received a warning from its onboard system about the presence of a helicopter in close proximity. The crew informed the Air Traffic Control (ATC), which advised the Captain to take a go-around.

According to the spokesperson of IndiGo, the crew received an EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System) warning - confirming about the helicopter in the same circuit. As a precautionary measure, the IndiGo crew on board immediately informed the ATC, who advised the Captain to take a go around and subsequently proceed for landing. In compliance with the ATC advisory, IndiGo flight 6E-433 made a normal landing at the Chandigarh Airport, said the spokesperson.

The go-around, however, created a scare among the passengers. There was a panic about the presence of another plane on the runway that was about to take off while the IndiGo flight was about to land. This caused a scare about a possible collision being averted.

Airport Director Capt H S Toor said that go-arounds are very common. He said that aircrafts are asked to do this in case some problem can occur in landing an aircraft in the situation. He added that at the airports where the frequency of flights is more, a go-around is commonly taken.
