PHC popularity rising, Loni Kalbhor records101 childbirths in Nov

Little did 34-year-old Manisha Patanshetty know that her delivery at Loni Kalbhor primary health centre (PHC), 25 kms away from Pune, would be registered as the 101st one. In November alone this PHC has recorded 101 childbirths. The number continues to rise as pregnant women skip private hospitals in the area and register themselves here.

Not just Loni Kalbhor PHC, 20 others from the total 96 centres in the district have registered more than 30 deliveries every month, said Dr N D Deshmukh, district health officer. Three back-to-back deliveries a day and that too at a primary health centre may seem unimaginable, but the Loni Kalbhor centre achieved their target.

"Consistent efforts to contact pregnant women in the area, understand their reasons for visiting private hospitals and convincing them about quality care at the centre apart from providing transport facilities before and after delivery helped," Dr D J Jadhav, medical officer at the PHC, said.

Patanshetty's delivery was a critical one as she had less amniotic fluid. She said the transport facility provided by the PHC was of immense help. "We did not have to go all the way to Pune specially when the centre monitored the foetal heart beat every hour. At a big hospital we tend to feel lost as nobody guides us to the right doctor," she said. The PHC has colourful pictorial information and a list of do's and don'ts for pregnant women. A newborn corner has been specially earmarked where attendants also take care of low birth-weight babies, Deshmukh said.

From 62 deliveries in June to 75 in July, 77 in October and 101 in November, Loni Kalbhor PHC's success was applauded by the Governor. Meanwhile, across 96 PHCs the figure last month crossed 1,900 deliveries. In June 2012, 96 PHCs together had registered only 450 deliveries, Deshmukh said. A special fund of Rs 5.5 crore was allocated under the Shardagram Yojana of the Pune Zilla Parishad and here each mother was provided a kit that included towels and other items for the baby after the delivery.
