Plan to make Horniman Circle area an art hub

Like Brooklyn Street in New York or the streets of London that come alive with artists and musicians in the evening, south Mumbai's streets around the iconic Horniman Circle could become hubs for artisans through a new proposal.

Streets around the business locations of South Mumbai around the Horniman Circle, Asiatic Library and Customs House are deserted after the evening rush hours and can be converted into such art streets for artisans and performers from the state.

Mumbai Guardian Minister Jayant Patil has asked a team of architects to submit a detailed plan for improving the road to suit artisans, lighting arrangements and sitting spaces for citizens to enjoy music and watch artists at work.

"I have asked architects to submit a report in this regard," said Patil.

South Mumbai's Horniman Circle area is a heritage precinct and hosts several private functions for promotion of art every year but this will be first attempt from the government to initiate such activity. Two years ago, Bandra bandstand was opened for live performances and bands over weekends.

"Instead of the usual tar roads, we have asked them to submit proposal for roads that are pedestrian-friendly. The entire area around Horniman circle to Flora fountain can become a tourist attraction," said Patil.
