PMC to take help of VAT, Shop Act and Customs data

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will take help of VAT, Shop Act, Central Excise and Customs record for effective implementation of local body tax (LBT) and achieve target revenue equivalent to that estimated from octroi collection.

The civic administration had set a target of Rs 1,407.50 crore from octroi collection. However, the state government is likely to abolish octroi and introduce LBT in place of it.

"The octroi contributes 40 per cent to the total revenue collection of PMC. We will have to work hard to achieve the same target from local body tax," said municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak.

The PMC is gearing up for the challenge and has already started working on it, he said.

The official records of traders available with various government agencies, including sales tax office, collector office, central excise and custom office, are being collected so that the tax can be charged accordingly. The PMC staff will also conduct a survey to find out traders who are not on office records.

"The civic body will also conduct training for the staff to be appointed by LBT cell. The staff with the octroi department will be transferred to other civic departments. The staff for LBT cell will be selected from all other departments," said Pathak.
