Psychological counselling much more effective measure to curb eve-teasing, feel private school authorities

Most private schools feel that the idea, to ask the girl students to leave the premises of government schools five minutes earlier than boys to avoid instances of eve teaching, will be of little help.

On receiving these instructions from the UT Education Department, the city-based government schools on Wednesday implemented it. The private school authorities felt that rather than staggering timings, students should be counseled and trained psychologically.

Taking to Chandigarh Newsline, Principal DAV School, Sector 15, Rakesh Sachdeva said, "This change in timings will do nothing but will for sure generate more curiosity among boys. Moreover this leads to discrimination. If students are taught together they should also be trained, counseled about the punishments one can get after indulging in eve-teaching," she added.

After instances of eve-teasing reported from the city, SSP Naunihal Singh met with the school and other authorities and came up with the suggestion of staggering timings.

Administrator St Kabir Public School, Sector 26, Gurpreet Singh Bakshi said, "Authorities should be more concerned about the areas surrounding schools. Eve teasing can in no way take place inside the school premises. There is need to deploy more police personnel so that outsiders fear to indulge in eve teasing. Making changes in time will not help much."

Similarly, one of the private school principals, requesting anonymity, said that rather than changing timings, authorities should teach girl students self-defense. It is always outsiders and anti-social elements who harass girls, the principal said.

However, the scene outside the schools was no different on Wednesday.

When Director Public Instructions (DPI) (Schools) Upakar Singh was asked about it, he opined, "This has been introduced after discussions and it will for sure help in tackling the problem."
