PU health centre reels under staff shortage

Bhai Ghanaiya Ji Health Centre of Panjab University (PU) is reeling under staff shortage. Against the sanctioned five posts of Allopathy doctors only two regular and one re-employed doctors are providing service to out door patient (OPD) that have grown from 120 patients to over 350.

According to PU's official website there are 16 hostels for students on the campus, seven for boys and nine for girl students. These hostels accommodate about 5900 students.

Though PU is having around 70 per cent girl students, the varsity failed to have regular gynecologists.

There are five posts of allopathy doctors, but in 2000 one post was converted to Ayurvedic category on compassionate ground.

Sources have informed that health center staff had written to the varsity authorities to re-convert the ayurvedic seat back to allopathy but to no effect.

The post of eye specialist and pediatrician is still lying vacant.

The health center is having two part time doctors who work for two hours only and three doctors are working on contractual basis for limited time.

One of the doctors said, requesting anonymity, said, "PU health centre is only centre that provide services to OPD patients in the morning and evening. One shift is from 8.30 am to 10.00 pm and next is 10.00 pm to 8.30 am of next day. It is very difficult to work so much."

" When there is senate or syndicate or any protest then one doctor has to be there. With the passage of time the influx of patients in the health centre has increased manifolds", he added.

It is learnt that since 1998 umpteen request had been made to the PU authorities to appoint additional two doctors but to no effect.

Even the agenda of Board of Finance, which is coming up for discussion in upcoming Senate meeting, says that there are enough doctors in the health centre and there is no need to appoint more.
