Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and singer Asha Bhosle conferred Punyabhushan Award on noted compere and anchor Sudhir Gadgil at a function held at Balgandharva Auditorium on Sunday. In its silver jubilee year, the award is given to noted Puneites by Punyabhushan Foundation (Tridal-Pune) in recognition of their contributions in various fields on national and international level.
Gadgil, who has been anchoring events and functions across the country and abroad for over two decades, has conducted over 3,000 interviews including those of prominent personalities such as Indira Gandhi, Lata Mangeshkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Madhuri Dixit, Balasaheb Thackeray and Sharad Pawar.
"The credit for my success goes to various personalities whom I met when I was growing up in the city. I learnt important lessons from individuals — be it late businessman Shantanurao Kirloskar or a woman scrapdealer whom I met on a road. People like P K Atre and P L Deshpande left a deep imprint on my mind. I learnt tricks of the trade from them," said Gadgil. He also gave credit to his wife, mother and father for allowing him to quit his job and pursue the profession.
Pawar said that Gadgil has proved that anchoring can be a way to earn a living.
"I have seen anchors who speak more than the chief guest at the function. The audience is often tormented by this. Being a public figure, I have to experience this quite frequently. But in Sudhir's case, I am glad this never happened. It's a delight to listen him speak. He chooses apt words and speaks as much required," said Pawar.
An impromptu tongue-in-cheek interview of Gadgil taken by Asha Bhosle had the audience break into laughter. Noted Film Maker Jabbar Patel, Mayor Vaishali Bankar, former Union minister Mohan Dharia, Symbiosis founder S B Mujumdar were among the many prominent people present on the occasion.
