Rain played spoilsport in the 60th convocation of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as the chief guest, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, cancelled her visit due to bad weather conditions in Aligarh on Saturday. However, she addressed the university students through teleconferencing and assured that efforts would be made to grant autonomous status to AMU.
After initial disappointment following cancellation of Sonia's visit, students got a surprise when the UPA leader addressed them through teleconferencing. She connected with them, using Urdu words and poetry in her speech. Sonia said that the issue of minority character of AMU was pending in the Supreme Court. "Main yakeen dilati hun ki university ka tarikhi kirdar bahal rakha jayega (I assure that historical character of the university would be maintained)," she said. "University ki khudmuktari banane ke har prayas kiye jayenge (efforts would be made to grant the university autonomous status)."
Sonia said that AMU had played a very important role in freedom struggle. "This university is known for its secular education and it represents Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb of the nation in true sense," she said.
Sonia said that her family has old relations with AMU. The university has always encouraged the Gandhi family and honored them by naming its historical buildings after them, she said. Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Rajiv Gandhi Centre of Diabetes and Indira Gandhi Hall of Residence are few of them. Sonia encouraged the students to believe in their ability and assured that there would be no discrimination against them. She read poetry in her address: "Sitaron ke aage jahan aur bhi hai." In the concluding line of her address, Sonia motivated the students by saying, " Jo abr yahan se uthta hai, wo saare jahan par barsega." She said that these students are future leaders of the nation.
Earlier, Sonia was to reach the AMU campus by a chopper at 11 am. But because of rain, her arrival was postponed to 1 pm. Later, the university authorities were informed that Sonia's visit was cancelled and she will address the students through teleconferencing from Delhi. Arrangements were made inside Kennedy hall for teleconferencing.
