Strong, fiercely independent, selfless, 34-year-old and unapologetic about being single — these qualities about Saanchi, the protagonist of Sony's latest show, Kehta Hai Dil…Jee Le Zara made us curious. A seasoned actor, Sangeeta Ghosh as Saanchi, makes a striking comeback statement as she vrooms in her jeep, with a zest for life. Not long ago, the channel had us cheering for a similar character, Priya (Sakshi Tanwar) in Bade Achche Lagte Hain. Like Priya, Saanchi too celebrates the spirit of the modern Indian woman, who strikes a fine balance between her progressive lifestyle and traditional upbringing. Love and marriage enter the fray to change that equation.
Produced by Rose Audio Visuals, Kehta Hai Dil….Jee Le Zara, takes the viewers to Panchgani, into Saanchi's life who manages the family's strawberry farm after losing her parents. She is the "woman about the house", looking after her two grandmothers (the delightful Sulabha Deshpande and Meenakshi Sethi) and two siblings Advait Prabhu (Nabeel Ahmed) and Prachi Prabhu (Priyanka Sidana). Marriage is not in her agenda. We also get to see her single-but-ever-ready-to-mingle neighbour and friend Delnaz Irani as Dilshad. The grandmums, however, decide to find a suitable boy for Saanchi, which marks the entry of Dhruv Goel (Ruslaan Mumtaz), a young, suave and well-to-do lawyer. They appear to be poles apart — perfect for any love story.
But there is a glitch here. Why do all stories have to be about love? And, why does marriage have to be the beginning and end all Hindi GECs? Jee Le Zara has all the right elements — the smart sets, the wardrobe, the middle-class lifestyle, even the actors — but its heart is somehow misplaced in the drama dye. As cool as the concept sounds, the show is playing to the gallery, pandering to popular culture with long pregnant pauses, silly facial expressions, that funny ringtone of a background score and needless exaggeration. It would be unfortunate to watch Saanchi give into the clichéd love story and say yes to marriage and face yet another "mahal" of a house with its obnoxious scheming in-laws and convoluted plots. Many a leading female protagonists of so-called progressive Hindi soap operas have slipped into an indefinite coma on this altar of clichés. What would've been exciting instead was embarking on a journey with Saanchi, from losing her parents to fighting to save her company and emerge as a successful businesswoman in a cut-throat world of competitors.
