Right act

Soft-Spoken Jail minister Shankar Chakrabaty shows an exemplary resolve when it comes to taking hard decisions. Last week, the office of IG (Prisons) recommended two names for President's Medal Madhusudan Sarkar, now SP of Purulia central jail, and Prasenjit Kolay, an official of the department who during most of his career worked at the office of the IG and acquired the exceptional quality of being in the good book of successive IGs. While everyone appreciated Sarkar's name in the list, Kolay's name triggered severe criticism since he hardly worked in any jail. The minister took serious exception to this and Kolay's name was ultimately dropped.
