Rs 11,000 incentive for brides of mass marriages in Haryana

To check social evils like dowry and encourage mass marriages, the Haryana government has come up with the "Kanyadan" scheme, under which, an incentive of Rs 11,000 will be handed over to each bride during mass marriages organised by Red Cross societies or any registered NGOs in the state.

The scheme, which will be implemented from April 1, was announced by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in October, last year.

Haryana Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Geeta Bhukkal said: "To avail the benefit of the scheme, the beneficiary should be a Haryana domicile and must be above 18 years of age. This incentive would be given for solemnising mass marriages, at least 11 at a time, by Red Cross societies or any registered NGOs in the State. This incentive will be given irrespective of the caste, race, creed, religion or income of the beneficiaries, but they would have to provide a certificate regarding proof of girl's age."

The beneficiary seeking this incentive would have to submit an application to the respective secretary of the Red Cross Society or the NGO. The secretary, alongwith his recommendation, will forward these applications of a group of those getting married to the respective district social welfare officer, who would scrutinise the applications and forward these to the respective deputy commissioner for sanction.

After the approval of the deputy commissioner, the concerned district social welfare officer will make the payment to the concerned secretary, who in turn, would distribute the fund to the actual beneficiary. "Such beneficiaries can avail benefit of only one scheme of this kind in case other departments are also running similar schemes," Bhukkal said.

The district social welfare officers will not reject any application and these would be decided by the deputy commissioner. If aggrieved with the decision of the deputy commissioner, the beneficiary can file an appeal before the director general (Social Justice and Empowerment) within a month.
