Samajwadi Party leader shot dead

A 38-year-old advocate was shot dead at his residence on Monday morning allegedly by eight people armed with country-made pistols in Ghaziabad. The man was taken to a hospital nearby, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The incident was reported at 10.30 am from Bahmeta village in Ghaziabad. The advocate has been identified as Yashvir Yadav. He was an advocate at Raj Nagar civil court and a Samajwadi Party member.

According to police, Yadav was at his house when the shooting took place.

"Eight armed persons walked into his house and opened fire. Yadav's family members recognised five of the accused. Three of the accused are the Yadav's neighbours. The motive of the crime has not been established yet," Superintendent of Police Shiv Shankar said.

The accused are on the run, he said. Security has been tightened and additional police teams deployed, as the area is among those with the worst crime rates in Ghaziabad, police sources said.

Yadav's brother Ashok told Newsline that he was working inside his room when the incident took place.

"Yashvir was working in his room on the first floor of the house when eight persons entered and started firing through the window. They fled after shooting him thrice. I was at my shop nearby and rushed home after hearing gunshots."

He was taken to Columbia Asia Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The hospital's general manager Sumit Kumar said, "Yashvir was brought dead at 11.30 am. He had sustained severe bullet injuries. Three bullets, two in the chest and one in the back, could be seen prominently, though the actual number will be confirmed after the post-mortem report arrives."

Police have registered an FIR based on the complaint filed by Yadav's family at Kavi Nagar police station. "The suspects are on the run. Investigation is on to find the motive of the crime and to identify the accused," SP Shankar said.
