The Christ Church Girls High School in Kolkata was vandalised by a group of guardians Thursday, a day after a Class V student, who was allegedly ragged a week ago, died. The mob was allegedly aided by a large number of "outsiders" who broke furniture and computers.

Oindrila Das, aged about 11, was allegedly ragged by seniors after she failed to donate money on Teachers Day. The seniors locked her in a toilet and she was rescued by a sweeper.

She fell sick and died Wednesday after a doctor administered her an injection. She was declared dead at a private hospital, with her parents Santanu and Rekha alleging medical negligence. They have lodged a complaint with Dum Dum police against the school.

The irate mob demanded the school principal be handed over to them. The police and rapid action force stood guard at the school and confined teachers and the principal, Helen Sarkar, to a room as the mob continued to ransack the school for hours.

Conceding demands of the mob, Sarkar apologised to the parents and handed over her resignation letter to the police, who read it out to the agitated gathering. Later in the evening, she was arrested and charged with negligence. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called the victim's family and promised proper investigation into the death of the student. "The Chief Minister called Oindrila's mother, expressed shock and grief and promised action," her uncle Alokesh said.

Education Minister Bratya Basu visited the girl's home and ordered a probe.

Meanwhile, Oindrila's parents demanded strict action against the girls who locked her up. They rubbished the claim that she did not inform the school authorities of the incident. The girls who ragged her should be identified and strict action should be taken against them, they said.
