'Sex doctor' found guilty in cyber porn case

A fast-track court in Chennai on Wednesday convicted Dr L Prakash, an orthopaedician, arrested in December 2001 for making porn films and selling them abroad. He has been convicted under various sections, including those under the Information Technology Act. In fact, Dr Prakash's case was the first in India to be registered under the IT Act.

Besides Section 67 of the IT Act, the 'sex' doctor, as Prakash came to be called, was also charged under IPC Sections 120 B (conspiracy) and 367 (kidnapping), Section 516 of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act, Sections 4 and 6 of the Indecent Representation of Women (prohibition) Act and Section 27 of the Arms Act.

The court also convicted some staff members who had worked in Prakash's clinic, including his driver Vijayan, radiologist Asif and ward boy Saravanan. They had helped in bringing women to his beachside farmhouse in Kalanjikuppam in neighbouring Thiruvallur district where the films were shot and later posted on two porn websites—www.tamilsex.com and www.realindianporn.com.

Fast-track court judge R Radha, who delivered the verdict, acquitted the doctor under the charge of rape. She will pronounce the sentences on Thursday.

The sensational porn racket grabbed media headlines soon after a youth from Pondicherry, Ganesh, complained to police that the doctor had forced him to perform sexual acts with women and shot films.

Prakash had used the help of his brother Pradeep Lakhmanan in the US to launch the websites.

Police arrested the doctor on December 14, 2001, seizing thousands of porn CDs, which were sold abroad in the United States and France, marked "materials on surgical procedures".

They also found some machine-gun bullets from the doctor's farmhouse, apparently used by him for boar hunting in the area.

Tamil Nadu Medical Council president Dr K Prakasam told The Indian Express that once police handed the court order to the Council it would decide about cancelling Prakash's licence.
