Shahabuddin gets 10 years

A Siwan court on Friday sentenced RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin and two police guards to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for a murderous attack on then Superintendent of Police (SP) S K Singhal 11 years ago. Singhal is now a DIG rank officer posted at Bettiah.

The controversial Siwan MP was convicted in the case on Thursday and on Friday, Special Court Judge Gyaneshwar Prasad Srivastava announced the quantum of punishment under Section 307 (attempt to murder). Along with him his two police guards then, Jahangir and Khaliq, were also sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 each. Shahabuddin was also sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment under Section 27 of the Arms Act. All the sentences will run concurrently.

This is the fourth case in which the MP, behind bars for well over a year now, has been convicted. In May this year, he was sentenced for life in connection with the abduction and murder of CPI-ML activist Chhotelal Gupta. In June, he was sentenced for three years in a vehicle theft case and in March he was given two years of rigorous imprisonment for attacking the CPI-ML party office in Siwan.
