Sound Sense

Every time Delhi-based gypsy-jazz-cabaret-rock band Peter Cat Recording Co (PCRC) gets on stage, a haunting grotesque sound, that contains various genres of music, takes over. The audience gets hooked on to lead vocalist Suryakant Sawhney's interactive antics. The 25-year-old is now indulging in a solo dance music project titled "Lifafa". "I just had to give it a name, so I did. There's no meaning or story behind it. It's lifafa, as in, an envelope," says Sawhney.

He has never dabbled in electronic or dance music, nor does he have any particular training in the genre. "I wanted to explore playing alone, working on sounds and playing in a club vis-a-vis a festival. So, I started clubbing and wanted to listen to a certain sound. When I couldn't, I decided to create it," he says. The solo nine-track album, that Sawhney will launch on February 22 at Cocaine in Greater Kailash I, is an eccentric mix of sounds that he has recorded — from announcements made at railway stations to the honks of trucks at highways. It's difficult to define or box his music in a genre — there's jazz, disco, future ambient, piano samples and vintage Bollywood. Sawhney somewhere also adds "chudail step".

"I worked on the album for a year and each song defines my mood and environment at the time, the space I was in, not just mentally but also physically. So there is Whistling, which I made in Gangtok last year while PCRC was touring the Northeast. It has an oriental feel to it," says Sawhney. Then there is Boa Gombay with a subtle trippy feel, while Gopis reminds one of two vampires slow-dancing — his music too has his dry and cruel sense of humour. As member of PCRC, Sawhney sings and dances on stage but for "Lifafa", he'll be behind the console but promises to keep the drama intact. These might be two different identities, however, one thing that stays in his music is that Tim Burton-esque feeling — haunting, yet so pleasing.
